The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library has a vital role to play in offering services and support for the city’s residents with disabilities. That role includes maintaining a strong presence and leadership position as the source of information and innovation to help District residents live inspired, connected and enriching lives, inclusive of their disability. The Library system comprises the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (the downtown central library) and 25 neighborhood libraries. The Center for Accessibility, a public service unit, provides resources for District residents with disabilities, private and public agencies, and DC Public Library staff.

The Center for Accessibility offers audio and braille books for qualified District residents, computers with a variety of assistive technologies, assistance with obtaining sign language interpreters and other accommodations for DC Public Library events, and library service for people who are home-bound. Center for Accessibility staff provide outreach throughout the District for equivalent services and offer support on ensuring appropriate access and accommodation for all District residents with disabilities. The Library’s customers reflect a wide range of socioeconomic, cultural and religious affiliations, including people with disabilities.

The Central Library is undergoing a significant renovation, and the Center for Accessibility will be charged with developing and implementing a new vision for the provision of services for the District residents with disabilities within this dynamic new space and ensure consistent service in the neighborhood libraries. The Center for Accessibility Manager is part of the leadership team for the Central Library and works collaboratively with fellow department heads and other key staff to ensure the smooth operations and high-quality customer experiences. The Manager will also focus on how the entirety of the building can welcome and embrace the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Come work with the DC Public Library team to build a dynamic, inclusive experience throughout the library system. Our participants reflect a wide range of socioeconomic, cultural and religious affiliations within their countries, including people with disabilities, and we encourage people with disabilities and from other diverse backgrounds to apply.
