The DC Center for Independent Living (DCCIL), the DC Statewide Independent Living Council (DCSILC) Consumer Forum: “Navigating your Independence through Community Opportunities” will examine three of the major issues that impact the lives of people with disabilities.
Forum Topics Include:
1. Housing:
a. What is the status of accessible and affordable housing for people with disabilities in the District of Columbia?
b. How can people with disabilities have a greater influence in this arena?
c. Who can people with disabilities hold accountable for building housing that is accessible and affordable?
2. Transportation:
a. What are the transportation options for people with disabilities?
b. Has WMATA been responsive to the needs of people with disabilities?
c. Has the introduction of accessible cabs ameliorated transportation matters for people with disabilities?
3. Employment/Education:
a. What is the success rate for employing people with disabilities in DC over the past 3-5 years? How does that compare with other areas?
b. Who is being hired? Indicate them by gender, disability, age, race etcetera?
c. What employers have good track records for hiring people with disabilities? Have they been recognized by the District Government for doing so?
d. What has the District Government done to promote hiring people with disabilities?
