Ivymount's Fifth Annual Special Needs Resource Fair is only three weeks away!

The Resource Fair is a wonderful opportunity to learn about services and activities for individuals with special needs, including autism, in the DC area.

In addition to the almost 50 vendors currently registered, we are proud to offer a number of informational sessions. Each session will be presented twice from 12:30 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Informational Session Lineup:

Teaching Flexibility and Problem Solving

Director of Ivymount's Model Asperger Program, Monica Adler Werner, will give an overview of the research based concepts developed in her book, Unstuck and On Target (a curriculum for students with Autism and ADHD piloted at the Ivymount School) to support children in developing their flexible problem solving skills. Parents will have an opportunity to discuss strategies to enhance social learning, social skills, flexibility, executive functioning and self-regulation in children with autism spectrum disorders and ADHD.

Useful Tips and Tricks to Help Your Child through the Journey to Adulthood

Amy Alvord, Education Director, and Sharon Nickolaus, Transition Specialist, will share information on making connections with adult services, understanding your child's role in the transition planning process, promoting independence through the development of self-advocacy skills, and talking to your child about their disability.

Why the Function of Difficult Behavior Matters

Not all behavior plans are created equal. To have maximum impact on problem behavior, we must first consider function - the why. In this session - led by Jennie Kampf, Program Director in Ivymount's Autism Program - participants will learn four common functions of problem behavior, how they are identified, and discuss the importance of behavior intervention plans that address function.
